Project challenge

When Tata Communications decided to construct a new data center in Singapore, minimizing the facility’s Gross Floor Area (GFA) and maximizing the space available for revenue-producing server racks was extremely important. Within these competing ideals  the company still needed suffient  space  to accommodate the  necessary  critical plant items such as the UPSsystem. As long as data centers have been constructed, organizations take great strides to ensure that the plant and equipment required to support the servers does not encroach upon the valuable floor space that can be used for revenue purposes, this is often a complex equation — Tata Communication’s Singapore location is no different.

To solve this problem, the Tata needed to find not only the most appropriate UPS technology, but also a company with the engineering knowledge and installation talent to help them configure the correct number of UPS power in the least amount of space. After considering several options, Tata Communications selected HITEC.

Project solution

HITEC helped Tata Communications preserve GFA for revenue-generation equipment with an innovative solution: choosing containerized Dynamic Rotary UPS systems and stacking these s on the data center’s rooftop, initially 4 units at day 1

When it came to expanding the Data Centre Tata asked Hitec if it would be possible to reconfigure the existing DRUPS system when adding new units to support the increased building load? Hitec proposed an Isolated Parallel configuration as this would reduce the number of redundant units within the overall system and in so doing would increase the system resilience and improve the operational efficiency for both the DUPS System and the building as a whole. The ultimate solution is to install  a total of 14 Hitec Dynamic Rotary UPS units on the roof of the building.

In total each containerized DRUPS module  weighs around 50,000 kilograms — stacking 14 modules  needs careful consideration to ensure that there is no disruption to current operations. HITEC engineered a solution for stacking two units on top of each other, in 7 rows that would ensure comlete continuity to the building throughout the installation process for additional modules

Customer experience

By selecting HITEC, Tata Communications partnered with a company who assumes all responsibilities and creates a multifaceted approach to a difficult GFA challenge. HITEC was able to overcome a physical, mechanical and electrical challenge with a single proposal that saved an estimated 40% of space, that would have otherwise been used for plant and equipment devices.
